The most action-packed day in Indian options markets — how to trade weekly expiry without blowing up.

Why Expiry Day Is Different

On expiry day (Thursday for Nifty weeklies), two forces collide: theta acceleration hits its maximum (time decay is fastest) and gamma risk is at its peak (small underlying moves cause huge premium swings). This creates the most volatile trading environment of the week.

Options that were worth ₹50 on Wednesday morning can go to ₹200 or ₹0 by Thursday afternoon. This extreme movement attracts speculators but also creates the most losses for unprepared traders.

In Indian markets, weekly expiry volumes often exceed 2-3x the daily average. Nifty weekly options see massive volumes concentrated in the last 2-3 hours, with huge open interest collapsing as positions are closed or settled.

Theta Acceleration on Expiry Day

Time value decays exponentially as expiry approaches. An ATM Nifty option might decay ₹5/hour in the morning and ₹15/hour by 2 PM. By 3 PM, decay can be ₹30+/hour. This is why premium sellers love expiry day — they earn the most theta.

The "zero DTE" (zero days to expiry) phenomenon means that by 2:30 PM on Thursday, only intrinsic value remains. If you're holding OTM options, they're going to zero. If you're short them, you're collecting that decay.

Critical insight: on expiry day, OTM options lose value not just from time but from gamma decay. Even if Nifty moves 50 points toward your strike, the option might not gain value because time decay overwhelms the directional gain.

Gamma Risk — The Expiry Day Killer

Gamma measures how fast delta changes. On expiry day, ATM gamma is at extreme levels. A 30-point Nifty move that would normally change an option's value by ₹15 might change it by ₹30 on expiry day.

For sellers, this is the nightmare scenario: a sudden 100+ point move in the last 2 hours can turn a ₹20 OTM option into ₹100+ (you lose 5x what you collected). This gamma explosion is why position sizing and stop losses are critical on expiry.

The "gamma trap" zone: strikes within 50-75 points of spot on expiry afternoon have extreme gamma. If you're short these strikes and the market moves, your losses accelerate faster than at any other time.

Popular Expiry Day Strategies

Selling OTM strangles at 9:15 AM: Sell far OTM call and put (200+ points away) and let theta do the work. Risk: a trending day. Use strict stop losses at 2x premium collected.

Butterfly around max pain: Place a butterfly at the strike closest to max pain (the price at which option writers lose the least money). The theory is that the market gravitates toward max pain at expiry.

Directional bets with tight stops: Buy ATM options if you have a strong directional view. The leverage is extreme — a 50-point move can double your premium. But set a strict stop loss (50% of premium) because the option can also go to zero quickly.

Iron condor sell-off: Enter a tight iron condor (100-150 point wings on Nifty) and aim for theta decay. Close if any short strike is breached.

Expiry Day Risk Management

Rule 1: Never hold naked short options on expiry day without a hard stop loss. Gamma explosions can create losses that exceed your entire account.

Rule 2: Size down. Use 25-50% of your normal position size on expiry day. The leverage works both ways.

Rule 3: Avoid the last 30 minutes unless you're actively managing. Liquidity can dry up, spreads widen, and sudden moves become more common.

Rule 4: Use defined-risk strategies (butterflies, iron condors) instead of naked selling. The small premium you give up for protection is insurance against the gamma explosion scenario.

The Max Pain Theory

Max pain is the strike price at which the total value of all outstanding options (both calls and puts) is minimized — i.e., where option writers collectively lose the least money. The theory suggests that markets tend to gravitate toward max pain at expiry.

In Nifty, max pain has a reasonable (not perfect) track record as a magnet for expiry-day settlement. It's most useful as a reference point for strategy placement — centering your butterfly or iron condor near max pain gives you a statistical edge.
